According to the UN, giant mirrors that direct sunlight away from Earth may be required to meet climate goals.

 A report from the United Nations suggests that giant mirrors positioned to reflect sunlight back into space may be required to achieve climate goals.

Solar geoengineering, also known as solar radiation modification (SRM), is one of the UN Environment Programme's ideas for using cutting-edge technology to avoid a climate emergency.

According to the expert panel of climate scientists who compiled the report, "SRM is the only known approach that could be used to cool the Earth within a few years."

"SRM could offset some of the effects of increasing greenhouse gases on global and regional climate, including carbon and water cycles," according to climate model simulations, "but there could be substantial residual or overcompensating climate change at the regional scales."

The report found that more research is needed to learn more about how geoengineering technologies affect society and the environment.

Other technologies mentioned in the report included injecting large quantities of aerosols into the upper atmosphere to block out the Sun. This was recommended as the first "carbon neutral rocket launch" achieved by a UK company.

Not whenever space first mirrors have been proposed as an approach to mitigating the most obviously terrible impacts of environmental change, with previous US official confident Andrew Yang outstandingly distributing an arrangement to geoengineer the planet in 2019.

It would take approximately two decades to implement his proposal to place enormous foldable space mirrors in orbit, which would cost $4.86 trillion.

The United Nations noted that global efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases are not meeting the 1.5°C Paris Agreement target.

The UN Environment Programme's executive director, Inger Andersen, said that SRM shouldn't be used in place of the current goals to cut emissions.
