Christian Atsu of Black Stars is said to be missing following an earthquake in Turkey.

 


Christian Atsu, a Black Stars forward who plays for Hatayspor in Turkey, is said to be among the thousands of people still trapped under the rubble of the devastating earthquake in Turkey on Monday morning, according to a number of Turkish media outlets.

The search and rescue team is said to be looking for the 30-year-old in addition to Taner Savut, the director of his club.

Atsu played for the club over the weekend in their Turkish top flight victory over Kasimpasa, in which the Ghanaian scored the only goal.

Background In the early hours of Monday, a powerful earthquake struck south-eastern Turkey near the Syrian border, killing over 1,000 people as they slept and trapping many others.

According to the US Geological Survey, the 7.8 magnitude tremor occurred at a depth of 17.9 kilometers (11 miles) near Gaziantep at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT).

A second earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck the Elbistan district of the Kahramanmaras province hours later.

Over 900 people have died in Turkey and 500 in Syria thus far.

After spending some time in Saudi Arabia, the 30-year-old Black Star signed a one-year contract to join the Turkish team in September of that year.
